YWCA EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT UNIT

The YWCA Educational Support Unit (ESU) is a non-profit department set up by the YWCA to:
- provide psycho-educational consultation; - provide assessment and therapy to children with developmental and learning needs; - facilitate the integration and transition of these children into the mainstream education system.
Our Team
The ESU consists of:
- psychologist; - learning support co-ordinator; and - learning support teachers.
Where necessary, the team will work closely with other related professionals (Occupational therapists, speech therapists, etc)
Our Aims
- To support children with mild learning disabilities in cognitive, learning and behavioural issues, that is children with (mild) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dyslexia and Specific Learning Disability; - To integrate these children into mainstream child development centres and kindergartens; - To facilitate the transition of these children into mainstream primary school.
Our Services
- Psycho-educational/Psychological consultation to assess and identify areas of needs. - Observe, plan and implement Individual Education Plan (IEP) and complementary Learning Support Programmes within the regular educational setting. - On-going assessment and monitoring of programme effectiveness. - Provide training and development in specific instructional strategies, to equip teachers and caregivers to support special needs children. - Support the transition of these children into mainstream primary school where necessary.
Our Approach
The ESU works closely with families and pre-school centres to forge a cohesive partnership that will maximise the learning potential of these children.
Our Programmes
- Psycho-Educational/ Psychological Assessments. --Screening, diagnosis and identification of needs.
- Integration Programme, within the pre-school environment, comprises of: -- Individual Education Plan aimed at optimising each child’s learning potential. -- Individual Learning Support Programmes. -- Group Learning Support Programmes. -- Teacher Training Programmes. -- Parent Training Programmes.

- Early detection and early intervention, to provide children with special needs with regular pre-school education that will: - enable them to develop and interact with others; - gain that sense of acceptance and belonging; and - build their confidence and independence. These will better prepare them for the mainstream education system. - Early detection and identification of more seriously affected children, and referral of these children to special schools. - Learning of values like caring, sharing, empathy, etc for normal children.
The Fees
The fees may vary according to the programmes.
Psychological consultation is from $120 Psycho-educational assessment is from $600
The Financial Assistance Scheme is available for low income families. Approval is subject to eligibility criteria.
